Classroom Updates — BYOD

By Adit Burkule and Wiebke Kuhn

As many of you remember, we have been preparing to reduce the number of computers at teaching podiums in classrooms for a couple of years now. Changes in technology, including the increased use of laptops in general and Apple’s move to discontinue dual-booting capacity, have shown that this direction for the college will provide more flexibility for everyone using the classroom technology.

This summer, we are entering the next phase by removing 41 computers from teaching podiums in classrooms across campus, continuing the journey to a Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) model. (See list below)

Along with these changes, we will prepare each teaching podium with robust connectivity for laptops. In addition to the familiar adapters, we will add wireless presentation capabilities. Document cameras and Blu-ray players will remain, but all Apple Superdrives and Logitech Meetup cameras will be removed.

ITS encourages you to explore using your laptop or other mobile devices with the adapters or with the wireless presentation tool (AirMedia) before classes start.

To support this shift in classroom technology, ITS will update the Classroom Technology Support page with new information, better search functionality, and an FAQ page. By August, the FAQ page will cover questions such as, How do I connect my laptop to the wireless presentation? and How do I ensure that the projection screen shows what I want students to see?

For the occasional video conferencing solution (Zoom etc.), ITS is offering a self-sufficient video conferencing kit for departments. Sayles 253 will also be updated over Winter break 2024 for better video conferencing for hybrid committee meetings or interview situations.
